Twitter’s Future, Glamorization Worries

Today while the television channel lingered on WE tv, a commercial for Bridezillas showcased comments about the series from Twitter users. Each quote was paired with the usernames for all to see. After investigation I found that not only is WE tv making their viewers feel valued by showing their Twitter posts on national TV, the producers of Bridezillas are also having the brides-to-be sign up in order to update fans. Here’s an excerpt from their website:

“First up, Courtney is a Southern Bridezilla with a flair for the theatrical! Meanwhile, Valerie is a beautiful California Bridezilla whose ego is only matched by her violent temper! Want to know more? Follow the brides:

Follow Courtney: @Cherrypotter77
Follow Valerie: @BridezillaVal”

In the past I would think “This is just crazy!” and run to tell everyone but now I just feel the idea is overplayed. I am sure many of us who have used Twitter for a long time are starting to think “Not Twitter again. Please.” at any mention on radio, newspaper or magazine. Even though all of this Twitter business may be getting a little annoying to me, it is still great in fact that WE tv is doing this. Why? They may think it’s only helping them to build up their social kingdom but it’s really helping all businesses. For companies using Twitter to engage their customers, the widespread publicity which glamorizes Twitter brings more and more people to sign up for Twitter each day. Your own customer, who may have noticed your profile but never was interested enough to check it out, will now have another reminder that maybe they really should join in. After that, they’ll follow you and possibly participate in what you’ve got going on in your stream. Twitter – it’s the magical land that just keeps on giving.

So that’s good news for companies as long as we’re all on this tweetercoaster, but is finally getting so much of the non-geek population on Twitter a good thing for everyone else? During the entire Oprah + Twitter fascination period, many bloggers remarked that this would be the beginning of the end for Twitter – or at least its value. Ever since Oprah entered the ‘sphere, I have been bombarded with @Kayla replies by users who are talking to other people named Kayla who are not me. Their username might be /moomoomilk but it doesn’t matter, they will still type @Kayla whaT are U doin UP SO LATE giiiiirl! This happened a few times last year, but now it happens every couple of days. Of course there are a lot of people with the name Kayla due to something very special in the 80s, but when you see such an increased amount of people join who know people named Kayla – something definitely happened recently. (I can’t imagine being /Bob, yet he doesn’t seem angry at all. In fact he looks quite happy running there). So with the addition of thousands and thousands of newbies, we can blame the O, other celebs and increasing tweet talk. There is no doubt that the magical universe is getting very, very cluttered – for better and for worse!
