Truffles and Trifles Orlando Cooking Class

by Kayla on May 22, 2009

Sometimes you really need to go out, relax and do something new when you live in Orlando. I surprised Daniel when he got home one night with a cryptic birdcage on the table which had a bottle of chili pepper flakes inside. Included was a little note which revealed his invitation to a special event that Thursday. His only hint was the bottle of chili flakes.

On Thursday I stole him away to Truffles and Trifles on Smith Street off of Edgewater. There we participated in a “Hot and Spicy” themed cooking class where we worked with other groups. Some made appetizers (rock shrimp and spicy mayo) or main dishes (won ton dumplings with scallops inside, paired with spicy mango salsa) while we worked on a chili with steak and chorizo.

About twelve people were in a company sponsored group (team building) and there was another group of three who came together. Daniel and I ended up working with someone around our age named Martin who came by himself. He had more experience than us in cooking already so it was a good match really and we had lots of fun. Our chili was really flavorful and everyone loved it. It was served with pepper cornbread that another group made. The meal was finished off with spicy ice cream – which initially we thought was a bad idea, but it ended up being my favorite part of the night. It was homemade vanilla ice cream using nutmeg, cardamom and other spices which gave it a hot, cinnamon flavor. Daniel and I are probably buying an ice cream maker very, very soon.

We fully recommend going to a cooking class at Truffles and Trifles. Their full Orlando cooking class schedule is right on their website and you can even make your reservation online.
